Universal basic income is essentially giving all people a salary without the need to work, often discussed with assumptions of automation taking jobs.
However, it is still often discussed with respect to the framework of the capitalistic system, not questioning the base assumptions where capitalism is seen as a tradeoff, accepting inequality to produce incentives that create more material efficiencies that are expected to 'grow the pie' and translate into more experiential value for the entire society. Though given that it is discussed in the context of automation with seemingly unlimited material efficiencies, UBI seems like a last-ditch effort for capitalists to retain wealth when there is no longer a societal benefit gained from this tradeoff that accepts inequality.
