There are various purposes of education that range from the individual to the societal, but all fundamentally decided based on the values and motives of those with power. Areas include: * Civic participation * Transmission of culture * Production of economic value * Advancing knowledge * Solving problems * Personal fulfilment * Pleasure of learning * Developing [[Virtue|virtues]] There exists a self-referential problem. That is, education can be used to instil the values and opinions that govern the decision-making processes of those who control education.
