Knowledge taxonomies categorise or systematise the different types of knowledge for learning, such as, Bloom's taxonomy or the knowledge-learning-instruction (KLI) framework.
These taxonomies do not represent the truth of reality - rather have different affordances and make varying epistemic assumptions that are laden with values around the purpose of education. The blind positivist mirage that these taxonomies offer is dangerous.
Hence, we should not make positivist assumptions of them being a strong rigorous grounding on top of which research can be built, as often seen in computer science research into educational technology. Rather we should see them in pragmatic ways, where we aim to make use of the affordances of the taxonomy whilst ensuring that the laden-values are aligned with the intentions of the project (value sensitive design).
For example, Bloom's taxonomy is simple in its design which aids in its ability to act as a shared object of pedagogical discussion with teachers, and also aids in motivating practice to incorporate a variety of pedagogical strategies. Meanwhile, the KLI framework provides a decomposition into types of knowledge components, with a mapping to instructional principles which simplifies executability and therefore can be useful in constructing the pedagogical model of ITSs. However, it is equally important to understand what they do not do and the tradeoffs that must be made.
It would be nice if there was a list of such taxonomies or frameworks that are tagged with associated qualities, affordances and values - that can aid the researcher, designer, or otherwise in the process of value sensitive design to make more explicit and consistent pedagogical decisions that align with their needs. I do not know of any (as of 29/9/2025).
Though it is impossible to find taxonomies that align for every single one of our needs, and it is impractical to create a new taxonomy whenever there is a necessity. In fact, one of the core advantages of taxonomies is providing a shared object of understanding, such that others have prior knowledge that can aid in comprehending your work.
